It's finally time to look into Mother Monster and her vibrant discography today: the enigma that is Lady Gaga. For twenty-five years, she's been confusing, entrancing, and impressing the public eye with her unique style, her undeniable talent, and her otherworldly personality. I've been a big fan since she really came to light while I was in high school, and I've really been looking forward to listening through her catalogue.

Here is our fact dump (information current as of August 2025):

-Given name is Stefani Germanotta

-39 years old (she's an Aries)

-Born in New York City, New York

-Singer, songwriter, and actress

-She both sings and plays piano

-Primary genres include pop, dance, electronic, jazz, and rock

-Is engaged to fiancé Michael Polansky, an entrepreneur she's been with since 2020

-Has won 438 total awards, including 1 Oscar, 1 Emmy, 2 Golden Globes, 14 Grammys, 6 AMAs, 10 Billboards, 1 Golden Raspberry, 3 People's Choice Awards, and 14 current Guinness World Records

-Has released 7 solo studio albums

We'll be focusing solely on Gaga's solo catalogue, which will not include her collaborations with the late great Tony Bennett, and we also won't be looking at her soundtracks for her films like A Star is Born and Joker: Folie a Deux. Deep breath, and here we go!

The Fame (2008)

Gaga's debut electropop/synth pop/dance pop album was released August 19th, 2008 by Streamline, KonLive, Cherrytree, and Interscope when she was 22 years old. With a run time of 50:20, the album had five singles released: Just Dance (4/8/08); Poker Face (9/23/08); Eh, Eh (Nothing Else I Can Say) (1/10/09); LoveGame (3/23/09); and Paparazzi (7/6/09). The Fame peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200, has been certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA, and won Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 2010 Grammy Awards. What an iconic album this is, both as a debut for Gaga and as a time capsule of late '00s pop music. There's still so much on this album that I enjoy, and even under all of the bubbly production you can detect hints of the incredible singing voice we now all know she has. Here's my Top 3:

Track 4: Poker Face (written by N. Khayat, S. Germanotta)

This is one of my all-time favorite Gaga songs still to this day. It also won Best Dance Recording at the 2010 Grammys.

I wanna hold ‘em like they do in Texas, please/Fold ‘em, let ‘em hit me, raise it, baby, stay with me, I love it/LoveGame intuition, play the cards with spades to start/And after he’s been hooked, I’ll play the one that’s on his heart/Oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh/I’ll get him hot, show him what I’ve got/Oh, whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh/I’ll get him hot, show him what I've got/Can’t read my, can’t read my, no, he can’t read my poker face/She has got me like nobody/Can’t read my, can’t read my, no, he can’t read my poker face/She has got me like nobody/P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face/P-p-p-poker face, p-p-poker face

Track 9: Starstruck ft. Space Cowboy & Flo Rida (written by M. Kierszenbaum, N. Dresti, T. Dillard, S. Germanotta)

I heard this one back in high school and immediately loved the vibe. It's a classic but underrated Gaga dance track.

Rolling out to the club on the weekends, styling out to the beat that you’re freaking/Fantasize on the track that you’re tweaking, blow my heart up/Put your hands on my waist, pull the fader, run it back with original flavor/Queue me up, I’m the twelve on your table, I’m so starstruck/I’m so starstruck, baby, ‘cause you blow my heart up/I’m so, I’m so starstruck, baby, ‘cause you blow my heart up/I’m so, I’m so starstruck, baby, ‘cause you blow my heart up/I’m so starstruck, baby, 'cause you blow my heart up

Track 11: Paper Gangsta (written by N. Khayat, S. Germanotta)

I found this one in the last few years and added it to my playlist right away. There's something about the beat that I just love.

Midnight rush with a pen in my hand, dinkin Lincoln, sand-script with a fan/Remembering me before we began, sometimes, I felt so Def in the Jam/But the ones who loved me told me stop, like, home girl can’t catch it if it drop/A superwoman chick, you know that I am, some shit don’t fly by me in a man/‘Cause I do not accept any less/Than someone just as real, as fabulous/Don’t want no paper gangsta, won’t sign away my life to/Someone who’s got the flavor but don't have no follow through/Don’t want no paper gangsta, won’t sign no monkey papers/I don’t do funny business, not interested in fakers/Don’t want no paper gangsta, oh, oh/Ddon’t want no paper gangsta, oh, oh/Don’t want no paper gangsta/Don’t want no paper gangsta

The Fame Monster (2009)

Gaga's reissue of her first album was released November 17th, 2009 by Streamline, KonLive, Cherrytree, and Interscope when she was 23 years old, both as a full reissue of The Fame and also with the eight new songs as a standalone EP. With a run time of 34:09, the EP had four singles released: Bad Romance (10/19/09); Telephone (1/26/10); Alejandro (4/20/10); and Dance in the Dark (8/25/10). The Fame Monster peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200, has been certified 5x Platinum by the RIAA, and won Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2011 Grammy Awards. Full transparency, I've always liked The Fame Monster more than The Fame. The darker tone just works so well with her vibe, and the songs as a whole are just more interesting. Here's this Top 3:

Track 1: Bad Romance (written by N. Khayat, S. Germanotta)

Come on, who doesn't like this song at least a little bit? It won Gaga another Grammy, too: Best Female Pop Vocal Performance 2011.

I want your ugly, I want your disease/I want your everything as long as it’s free/I want your love/Love, love, love, I want your love/I want your drama, the touch of your hand/I want your leather studded kiss in the sand/I want your love/Love, love, loved I want your love/You know that I want you, and you know that I need you/I want it bad, your bad romance/I want your love and I want your revenge/You and me could write a bad romance/I want your love and all your lover’s revenge/You and me could write a bad romance/Oh, oh, oh, oh/Caught in a bad romance/Oh, oh, oh, oh, caught in a bad romance/Rah, rah, ah, ah, ah/Roma, Roma, ma/Gaga, ooh la la/Want your bad romance

Track 2: Alejandro (written by N. Khayat, S. Germanotta)

This is another absolute favorite of mine from all of Gaga's music. It's so catchy, it's danceable, and it's got some great vocal moments.

She’s got both hands in her pocket/And she won’t look at you, won’t look at you/She hides true love en su bolsillo/She’s got a halo around her finger around you/You know that I love you, boy/Hot like Mexico, rejoice/At this point, I’ve gotta choose/Nothing to lose/Don’t call my name, don’t call my name, Alejandro/I’m not your babe, I’m not your babe, Fernando/Don’t wanna kiss, don’t wanna touch, just smoke my cigarette and hush/Don’t call my name, don’t all my name, Roberto/Alejandro, Alejandro/Ale, Alejandro, Ale, Alejandro/Alejandro, Alejandro/Ale, Alejandro, Ale, Alejandro

Track 8: Teeth (written by T. Riley, P. Bender, S. Germanotta)

Great beat on this one. It's one of her more abstract, absolutely, but there something about it I've always liked.

Don’t want no money, want your money, that shit’s ugly/Just want your sex, want your sex/Take a bite of my bad girl meat, take a bite of me/Show me your teeth, let me see your mean/Got no direction, no direction, I need direction/Just got my vamp, got my vamp/Take a bite of my bad girl meat, take a bite of me, boy/Show me your teeth, the truth is sexy/Tell me something that’ll save me, I need a man who makes me alright/Tell me something that’ll change me, I’m gonna love you with my hands tied/Show me your teeth, just tell me when/Show me your teeth, open your mouth, boy/Show me your teeth, show me what you got/Show me your teeth, teeth, teeth, teeth

Born This Way (2011)

Gaga's sophomore dance pop/synth pop album was released May 23rd, 2011 by Streamline, KonLive, and Interscope when she was 25 years old. With a run time of 61:07, the album had six singles released: Born This Way (2/11/11); Judas (4/15/11); The Edge of Glory (5/9/11); Yoü And I (8/23/11); Marry the Night (11/11/11); and Bloody Mary (12/2/22). Born This Way peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200, has been certified 4x Platinum by the RIAA, and was nominated for two Grammys in 2012. I love this album, and have listened to the whole thing multiple times since I bought it at the end of my freshman year of college. It's a neat blend of club dance and glam rock, and this album marks the beginning of everyone's recognition of Gaga's powerhouse vocals. I debated a lot with this one, but here's the Top 3:

Track 8: Bloody Mary (written by P. Blair, S. Germanotta, F. Garibay, W. Grigahcine, C. Sparks)

I liked this song before Wednesday made it iconic, but I was so thrilled to see it used on such an awesome show in a very cool way. It definitely has deserved its moment in the sun.

Love is just a history that they may prove/And when you’re gone, I’ll tell them my religion’s you/When Punktious comes to kill the king upon his throne/I’m ready for their stones/I’ll dance, dance, dance with my hands, hands, hands/Above my head, head, head, like Jesus said/I’m gonna dance, dance, dance with my hands, hands, hands/Above my head, hands together, forgive him before he’s dead because/I won’t cry for you/I won’t crucify the things you do/I won't cry for you, see/When you’re gone, I’ll still be Bloody Mary

Track 9: Bad Kids (written by F. Garibay, J. Laursen, P. Blair, S. Germanotta)

This is another all-time favorite of mine, and it always tugs on my emotions. I was never labeled "bad" myself, but I did have some misunderstandings due to an ADHD diagnosis I didn't receive until adulthood.

I’m a ****, I’m a loser, baby, maybe I should quit/I’m a jerk, wish I had the money, but I can’t find work/I’m a brat, I’m a selfish punk, I really should be smacked/My parents tried ’ til they got divorced ‘cause I ruined their lives/I’m a bad kid, and I’ll survive/Oh, I’m a bad kid, don’t know wrong from right/I’m a bad kid, and this is my life/One of the bad kids, don’t know wrong from right/Don’t be insecure if your heart is pure/You’re still good to me if you’re a bad kid, baby/Don’t be insecure if your heart is pure/You’re still good to me if you’re a bad kid, baby/A bad kid, baby/Don’t be insecure

Track 13: Yoü And I (written by B. May, S. Germanotta)

Truly, I think this may be Gaga's greatest song. Her vocals are unreal, and it's just so good from both a pop and rock angle.

It’s been a long time since I came around, been a long time, but I’m back in town/And this time, I’m not leaving without you/You taste like whiskey when you kiss me, oh, I’d give anything again to be your baby doll/This time, I’m not leaving without you/He said, "Sit back down where you belong/In the corner of my bar with your high heels on/Sit back down on the couch where we/Made love the first time nad you said to me," there's/Something, something about this place/Something ‘bout lonely nights and my lipstick on your face/Something, something about my cool Nebraska guy/Yeah, something about, baby, you and I

ARTPOP (2013)

Gaga's third EDM/synth pop album was released November 6th, 2013 by Streamline and Interscope when she was 27 years old. With a run time of 59:04, the album had three singles released: Applause (8/12/13); Do What U Want (10/21/13); and G.U.Y. (3/22/14). ARTPOP peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified Platinum by the RIAA. I've been hoping this album would grow on me for almost 12 years now, but unfortunately that has not been the case. There's a few moments that I do enjoy, but the vast majority of the songs here just sound like a cluster of chaos that's trying to pass off as super creative. I did not have trouble picking this Top 3:

Track 3: G.U.Y. (written by A. Zaslavski, M. Bresso, S. Germanotta)

A big draw for me on this one is the clever lyricism, which ya'll know I love to see. It's catchy as all getout, too, and fun to sing with.

I wanna be the girl under you/I wanna be your G.U.Y./Oh yeah, I wanna be the grave and earth you/Our sex doesn’t tell us no lies/I’m gonna wear the tie, want the power to leave you/I’m aiming for full control of this love, of this love/Touch me, touch me, touch me sweet, love me, love me, please retweet/Let me be the girl under you that makes you cry/I wanna be that guy/I wanna be that guy/I wanna be that guy/The girl under you, guy

Track 6: MANiCURE (written by N. Monson, D. Zisis, P. Blair, S. Germanotta)

This one gives Born This Way vibes, which is a nice break from most of the rest of this album. It's got some more clever lyrics, too.

Put some lipstick on, perfume your neck and slip your high heels on/Rinse and curl your hair, loosen your hips and get a dress to wear/I’m the one who’s been coming ‘round looking to loving you/You’re the medicine I need to heal the way you make me feel/I’m gon’ be manicured, you wanna be manicured/Ma-ma-ma-manicure, she wanna be man cured/Salon’s enough for her, not to feel so insecure/Ma-ma-ma-manicure, she wanna be take care’n of/Can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it/I’m addicted to the love that you garner/Can you feel it, can you feel it, can you feel it/Like a serial killer, man is a goner

Track 14: Applause (written by D. Zisis, S. Germanotta, N. Monson, P. Blair, M. Bresso, N. Mercier, J. Arias, W. Grigahcine)

This is absolutely the best and most memorable song on this album. Written about Gaga's own experience of having a hip surgery directly after a tour, it's a neat look inside her head at how much she loves what she does.

I stand here waiting for you to bang the gong/To crash the critic saying, "Is it right or is it wrong"/If only fame had an IV, baby, could I bear/Being away from you, I found the vein, put it in here/I live for the applause, applause, applause/I live for the applause-plause, live for the applause-plause, live for the/Way that you cheer and scream for me/The applause, applause, applause/Give me that thing that I love, I’ll turn the lights out/Put your hands up, make ‘em, touch, touch/Give me that thing that I love, I’ll turn the lights out/Put your hands up, make ‘em touch, touch/A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E, make it real loud/Put your hands up, make ‘em touch, touch/A-P-P-L-A-U-S-E, make it real loud/Put your hands up, make ‘em touch, touch

Joanne (2016)

Gaga's fourth dance pop/soft rock/Americana album was released October 21st, 2016 by Streamline and Interscope when she was 30 years old. With a run time of 47:23 on the deluxe edition, the album had three singles released: Perfect Illusion (9/9/16); Million Reasons (10/29/16); and Joanne (12/22/17). Joanne peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200, has been certified Platinum by the RIAA, and was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2018 Grammys. I feel like this album does not get the appreciation or recognition it deserves, especially with how vulnerable Gaga's songwriting is here. It's more low key, sure, but it's never boring and it's honestly a beautiful piece of work. I struggled slightly with this Top 3:

Track 3: Joanne (written by M. Ronson, S. Germanotta)

This is as close to country as we've gotten with Gaga, and I love the acoustic feel of it. It won Gaga Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2019 Grammys, and it's also a beautiful, heart-wrenching tribute to the song's namesake, Gaga's beloved Aunt Joanne.

Take my hand, stay, Joanne/Heaven’s not ready for you/Every part of my aching heart/Needs you more than the angels do/Girl, where do you think you’re going/Where do you think you’re going, going, girl/Girl, where do you think you’re going/Where do you think you’re going, going, girl

Track 7: Million Reasons (written by M. Ronson, H. Lindsey, S. Germanotta)

Give me a vocal and piano track from Gaga and I am a happy camper. The emotion in this song is brimming over, and it's just gorgeous.

You’re giving me a million reasons to let you go/You’re giving me a million reasons to quit the show/You’re giving me a million reasons, give me a million reasons/Giving me a million reasons, about a million reasons/If I had a highway, I would run for the hills/If you could find a dry way, I’d forever be still/But you’re giving me a million reasons, give me a million reasons/Giving me a million reasons, about a million reasons/I bow down to pray, I try to make the worse seem better/Lord, show me the way to cut through all his worn out leather/I’ve got a hundred million reasons to walk away/But baby, I just need one good one to stay

Track 12: Grigio Girls (written by M. Ronson, H. Lindsey, M. Tucker, S. Germanotta)

I rediscovered this song right around the time I found two really special friendships in my life, so this sone hits hard. I wish every woman could experience the really special type of friendship described here, whether there's an age gap or not.

I was twenty-three, she was thirty-five/I was spiraling out and she was so alive/A Texas girl, real strong, taught me this drunk song/So when I start to bawl, she says, "Let your teardrops fall"/All the pinot, pinot Grigio girls/Pour your heart out, watch your blues turn gold/All the pinot, pinot Grigio girls/Keep it real cold, ‘cause it’s a fired up world, oh, oh, oh, oh/Make it all make sense, oh, oh, oh, oh/Does it all make sense, oh, oh, oh, oh/Make it all make sense

Chromatica (2020)

Gaga's fifth dance pop/house album was released May 29th, 2020 by Streamline and Interscope when she was 34 years old. With a run time of 43:08, the album had four singles released: Stupid Love (2/28/20); Rain on Me (5/22/20); 911 (9/18/20); and Free Woman (4/13/21). Chromatica peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200, has been certified Platinum by the RIAA, and was nominated for Best Pop Vocal Album at the 2021 Grammys. This felt like a return to form, or even a reclaiming, of the sound we heard from The Fame. It's poppy and colorful, but it definitely feels more mature and sure of itself. I had a tough time with this Top 3, too:

Track 2: Alice (written by A. Hedfors, J. Klahr, J. Tranter, M. Tucker, S. Germanotta)

Ya'll know I love a musical literary allegory. This has a classic Gaga dance beat but still feels like something new.

Could you pull me out of this alive/Where’s my body, I’m stuck in my mind/Oh, ma, ma, ma, oh, ma, ma, ma, I’m tired of screaming/Oh, ma, ma, ma, oh, ma, ma, ma, at the top of my lungs/Oh, my mother, oh my mother, I’m in the hole/I’m falling down, down, so down, down/My name isn’t Alice/But I’ll keep looking, I’ll keep looking for Wonderland/My name isn’t Alice/But I’ll keep looking, I’ll keep looking for Wonderland, Wonderland/Take me home/Take me to Wonderland, Wonderland/Take me home/Take me to Wonderland, Wonderland

Track 3: Stupid Love (written by M. Martin, M. Bresso, E. Rise, M. Tucker, S. Germanotta)

I don't know exactly what it is, but this song gets me fired UP. I will always take a dance break when this comes on.

You’re the one that I’ve been waiting for/Gotta quit this crying, nobody’s gonna heal me/If I don’t open the door/Kinda hard to believe, gotta have faith in me/Freak out, freak out, freak out, freak out, look at me/Get down, get down, get down, get down, look at me/Freak out, freak out, freak out, freak out, look at me now/‘Cause all I ever wanted was love/All I ever wanted was love/I want your stupid love, love/I want your stupid love, love

Track 9: Plastic Doll (written by J. Handlin, R. Yacoub, M. Tucker, S. Moore, S. Germanotta)

No, it's not a literaray comparison, but it is basically Barbie and I still love it. Also I didn't know until this week that Skrillex is on this song, so that's cool.

Open me up and cut me loose/I come with a purse and new shoes/Am I your type, am I your type/I’ve lived in a pink box so long/I am top shelf, they built me strong/Am I your type, am I your type/‘Cause I’ve spent too long dancing all alone/Dancing to the same song/I’m no toy for a real boy/If you’re a real boy/Don’t play with me, it just hurts me/I’m bouncing off the walls, no, no, no, I’m not your plastic doll

Harlequin (2024)

Gaga's sixth traditional pop/jazz album was released September 27th, 2024 by Interscope when she was 38 years old. With a run time of 41:27, the album had no singles released. Harlequin peaked at #20 on the Billboard 200. Hate on Joker: Folie a Deux all you want, from what I heard it deserves it, but I honestly love this album. It's a mix between a soundtrack (it's more of a companion album to the actual soundtrack) and a concept album (since Gaga stated that she's singing all of the songs as her character, Harley Quinn), and it's good to hear her return to jazz after the loss of her beloved friend Tony Bennett. I like this whole album a lot, but here's my Top 3:

Track 3: Oh, When The Saints (arranged by S. Germanotta, M. Polansky, B. Rice, B. Newman, A. Smith, D. Foose, S. Kortyka, D. Barrett, T. Stewart)

This is such a cool rendition of this traditional song. It just sounds like Gaga's having an absolute blast recording this.

Oh, when the saints go marching in/Oh, when the saints go marching in/Lord, I want to be in that number/When the saints go marching in/Oh, on that day they called my name/I took a breath and then I prayed/Oh, how I want to sing with the angels/When the saints do their parade

Track 6: That's Entertainment (written by H. Dietz, A. Schwartz)

Originally written for the 1953 film The Band Wagon, Gaga's voice sounds like it was made for this. Her vocals just sound so free.

Everything that happens in life can happen in a show/You can make ‘em laugh, you can make ‘em cry, anything, anything can go/The clown with his pants falling down, or the dance that’s a dream of romance/Or the scene where the villain is mean, that’s entertainment/The lights on the lady in tights, or the bride with a guy on the side/Or the ball where she gives it her all, that’s entertainment/The plot can be hot, simply teeming with sex, a gay divorcée who is after her ex/It can be Oedipus Rex where a chap kills his mother and causes a lot of bother/The clerk who is thrown out of work by the boss who is thrown for a loss/By the skirt who is doing him dirt, the world is a stage, the stage is a world of entertainment

Track 11: Close To You (written by H. David, B. Bacharach)

Of course Gaga can absolutely nail a Burt Bacharach love song. I like to think Karen Carpenter would be proud.

Why do birds suddenly appear evey time you are near/Just like me, they long to be close to you/Why do stars fall down from the sky every time you walk by/Just like me, they long to be close to you/On the day that you were born, the angels got together and decided to create a dream come true/So they sprinkled moondust in your hair of gold and starlight in your eyes of blue/That is why all the girls in town follow you all around/Just like me, they long to be close to you

Mayhem (2025)

Gaga's seventh synth pop album was released March 7th, 2025 by Streamline and Interscope a few weeks before her 39th birthday. With a run time of 53:04, the album has had two singles released so far: Disease (10/25/24) and Abracadabra (2/3/25). Mayhem peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 and has already been certified Platinum by the RIAA. Like Chromatica, this feels like a revisitation to older sounds of Gaga's but in a more mature way. It sounds to me like a really cool combination of The Fame Monster and Born This Way, with aa darker, edgier, almost spookier sound than recent years. It's newer to be sure, but I've been enjoying it, and here's my Top 3:

Track 1: Disease (arranged by S. Germanotta, A. Watt, H. Walter, M. Polansky)

This feels like an "evil twin" to Gaga's single The Cure, which is another song of hers that I love. It's very danceable, too, and has a cool beat.

There are no more tears to cry/I heard you begging for life/Running out of medicine/You’re worse than you’ve ever been/Screaming for me, baby, like you’re gonna die/Poison on the inside, I could be your antidote tonight/Screaming for me, baby, like you’re gonna die/Poison on the inside, I could be your antidote tonight/I could play the doctor, I can cure your disease/If you were a sinner, I could make you believe/Lay you down like one, two, three, eyes roll back in ecstasy/I can smell your sickness, I can cure ya, cure your disease

Track 2: Abracadabra (arranged by S. Germanotta, A. Watt, H. Walter, S. Severin, J. McGeoch, P. Clarke, S. Ballion)

For whatever reason, this one reminds me heavily of Bad Romance. Absolutely a dance worthy banger.

Pay the toll to the angels, drawing circles in the clouds/Keep your mind on the distance when the devil turns around/Hold me in your heart tonight, in the magic of the dark moonlight/Save me from this empty fight in the game of life/Like a poem said by a lady in red/You hear the last few words of your life/With a haunting dance, now you’re both in a trance/It’s time to cast your spell on the night/Abracadabra, amor-oo-na-na/Abracadabra, morta-oo-gaga/Abracadabra, abra-oo-na-na/In her tongue, she said death or love tonight/Abracadabra, abracadabra/Abracadabra, abracadabra/Feel the beat under your feet, the floor’s on fire/Abracadabra, abracadabra

Track 7: Zombieboy (arranged by S. Germanotta, A. Watt, H. Walter, J. Fauntleroy)

This one's just fun. It feels like it would've been right at home on The Fame.

See you over there in the back of this party/And your girlfriend isn’t here, yeah, your girlfriend isn’t here/Boy inside a cage looking angry and tired/Like you’ve been up for days, like you’ve been up for days/‘Cause you’re an animal, an animal/And you’re closing in on me/Yeah, you’re an animal, an animal/And it just can’t be this way/Oh, I can’t see straight, and my hands are tied/I could be your type from your zombie bite/No, I can’t see straight, but the feeling’s right/I could be your type from your zombie bite/We’re about to be up all night/Waking up a zombie/So put your paws all over me/You zombie boy

I hope you had as much fun as I did checking out Gaga's music. Happy listening, and see ya'll next week!
