Halloween, Vol. 5

Writer's picture: jordannswrightjordannswright

I'm even more excited for Halloween this year than normal, because now I get to share my love for this holiday with my baby girl. Introducing her to pumpkins, bats, skeletons, ghosties, and all the Fall things is a blast so far, and even though she's too little to remember this first one, her Daddy and I always will. 2024 has been personally exhausting, so getting to my favorite time of year (October through December) is like a breath of fresh air for me. Time to brew a pot of pumpkin spice coffee (NOT DECAF this year), turn on It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, and just have a great time.

As always, the full Halloween Playlist can be found on Apple Music under my profile @audioaesthetics, but the following is a sampling chosen at random to serve as our 2024 Halloween Playlist. Let's see what we've got in store for year five!

Moonshine by Caravan Palace (written by C. Delaporte, A. Toustou, A. Amzallag, A. de Bosredon Combrailes, H. de la Garanderie)

Originally featured on Caravan Palace's 2019 album Chronologic, this is one of many slightly spooky themed songs from this group to find a home on this playlist. It's a great one to gather your buds and recreate the skeleton dance to (you know, if you're into that).

You know well, what I've been through/Living there without a view/Asking why we missed our chance/And now I'm looking for something to get by/High and dry, everywhere/In my cell, I’m looking for/High and dry, everywhere/I’m looking for/Someone, evermore, sunshine, evermore/Someone, evermore, sunshine, evermore

My Moon My Man by Feist (written by L. Feist, J. Beck, O. Benchetrit, C. Spearin)

Originally featured on Feist's 2007 album The Reminder, this poppy little bop is a great playlist addition for a modern Halloween party. I enjoyed it a lot, and think it's the exact right amount of dark for a fun, upbeat indie-ish song like this.

My moon, my man, so changeable and/Such a lovable lamb to me/My care, my coat, leave on a high note/There's nowhere to go but on/Heart on my sleeve, not where it should be/The song's out of key again/My moon's white face, what day and what phase/It's the calendar page again/Take it slow, take it easy on me/And shed some light, shed some light on me please/Take it slow, take it easy on me/And shed some light, shed some light on me please

Monsters by Hurricane Bells (written by S. Schiltz)

Originally featured on Hurricane Bells's 2009 album Tonight is the Ghost, this song found its way to me via the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack, which every Millennial girl knows is a verified banger through and through. It's a fun indie song all year round, but especially fitting for now.

Situation's all critical/You've got to look first before you go/If you wasn't too sure then now you know/The situation is all critical/Wait, ok, you've got to look before you go/Wait, ok, you've got to look before you go/Deep into the darkness where I hide

Double Trouble by John Williams (written by J. Williams, W. Shakespeare)

Originally featured in the 2004 film Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, this has been a spooky season favorite of mine since I was 12. Combining the magic of John Williams's HP score with the witch chant from Macbeth is such a move.

Double, double toil and trouble/Fire burn and cauldron bubble/Double, double toil and trouble/Something wicked this way comes/Eye of newt and toe of frog/Wool of bat and tongue of dog/Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting/Lizard's leg and owlet's wing

DEATH by Melanie Martinez (written by M. Martinez)

Originally featured on Martinez's 2023 album PORTALS, this is one of several songs from this album that belong here on this list. It's an ethereal, shiny kind of spooky and is a lot of fun to listen to.

They're carving my name in the grave again/The flowers are fresh and their faces wet/My body has died, but I'm still alive/Look over your shoulder, I'm back from the dead/Lighting all your candles to draw me in/Saying all the same things, I'm gone this time/Your words mean nothing, so take 'em back/And meet me here across the plane/The other side, I'm not far/When you aren't around, I sink into the ground/I try to pretend I'm closer to you/Never understand it/You're always on my mind, I cannot help it/I don't wanna be carryin' the weight on my shoulders/Death has come to me, kissed me on the cheek, gave me closure/Immortal by design/I’ll be meeting you here every time/Back from the dead, back from the dead/I’m back from the dead, back from the dead/I’m back from the dead, back from the dead/I’m back from the dead, back from the dead/I’m back from the dead, back from the dead/I’m back from the dead, back from the dead/I’m back from the dead, back from the dead /I’m back from the dead back from the

Ghost by Noah Cyrus (written by B. Lee, J. Karvinen, T. Apte, J. Daniels, W. Oak)

Originally featured on Cyrus's 2020 album THE END OF EVERYTHING, this song and its spooky title fit into this playlist just fine. Plus, the album artwork is Halloween colored in orange and black, so it's like it was meant to be.

Why don't we kill the lights/I’m no good at hiding underneath a sea of tears/Flood pouring through my eyes/I can't even close 'em, I can't even see you clear/And when you're looking in the mirror/Demons may be closer than they may appear/You can even cry and sit and stare/Or try to run away, I'm tryna run away/I’m staring at a ghost/I’m staring at a ghost

Morticia's Theme by Vic Mizzy (written by V. Mizzy)

Written for the 1964 television show, this is the original instrumental theme for our most regal and spooky queen Morticia Addams, portrayed here by Carolyn Jones. The piece definitely evokes Morticia vibes, elegant and dark, sweet and sinister, and you can practically see her glide around the family home.

If you're celebrating this week, have a wonderful, happy, safe, and spooky Halloween! Happy listening, and see ya'll next week!
