It's Mother's Day week again - the time to celebrate those moms, grandmas, aunts, sisters, cousins, friends, teachers, mentors, dads, or any other person who has stepped into this fundamental role in our lives. Below is the 2023 Audio Aesthetics Mother's Day Playlist - the full master playlist can, as always, be found on Apple Music by following @audioaesthetics. Let's jump in and see what we've got this year!

Hymns Mash Up by Anthem Lights (written by W. Runyan, T. Chisholm)

Featured on Anthem Lights' 2019 album Hymns Medleys, this song is a beautiful mash up of four classic hymns, How Great Thou Art, It Is Well With My Soul, Great Is Thy Faithfulness, and Holy, Holy, Holy. This song shows examples of greatness, peace, faithfulness, and mercy, which are all perfect ways how God is the perfect parent. I also know my mom loves a good, classic hymn, so if your mom feels the same this is a track with which you can't go wrong.

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder/Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made/I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder/Thy power throughout the universe display/Then sings my soul/It is well with my soul/It is well, it is well with my soul/My Savior God, to Thee/How great Thou art, how great/Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father/There is no shadow of turning with Thee/All I have needed, Thy hand hath provided/Great is Thy faithfulness, O Lord/Holy, holy, holy, Lord God almighty/Early in the morning, our song shall rise to Thee/Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty/God in three persons, blessed trinity

The Mother by Brandi Carlile (written by P. Hanseroth, T. Hanseroth, B. Carlile)

Featured on Carlile's 2018 album By The Way, I Forgive You, this is a really sweet song dedicated to her eldest daughter, Evangeline. She doesn't shy away from the more difficult aspects of parenting like lack of privacy and constant messiness, and she balances it perfectly with the thing she absolutely loves about her daughter's personality and just how much she loves being her mother. It's beautiful, it's simple, and it's powerful, and I highly recommend giving it a listen.

Welcome to the end of being alone inside your mind/Tethered to another and you're worried all the time/You always knew the melody but you never heard it rhyme/She's fair and she is quiet, Lord, she doesn't look like me/She made me love the morning, she's a holiday at sea/The New York streets are as busy as they always used to be/But I am the mother of Evangeline

Temporary Home by Carrie Underwood (written by C. Underwood, L. Laird, Z. Maloy)

Featured on Underwood's 2009 album Play On, this is one of her many emotional ballads that fill up her repertoire. The entire song doesn't focus on a mothering relationship, but Verse 2 definitely does showcase the love a mother has for her daughter. For those moms that ever have or currently are stuck in a difficult spot, being strong is not always the easiest choice to make but the dark times are temporary.

Young mom on her own/She needs a little help, got nowhere to go/She's looking for a job, looking for a way out/‘Cause a halfway house will never be a home/At night, she whispers to her baby girl/"Someday we'll find a place here in this world"/This is our temporary home, it's not where we belong/Windows in rooms that we're passing through/This is just a stop on the way to where we're going/I’m not afraid because I know/This is our temporary home

Oh Mother by Christina Aguilera (written by K. DioGuardi, B. Coulais, C. Aguilera, L. Capistran)

Featured on Aguilera's 2006 album Back to Basics, this ballad is an ode to her mother, reminiscing on her tumultuous upbringing with her estranged father. This type of situation is rarely pleasant for any party involved, but hearing Aguilera sing about her gratefulness for her mother taking care of her family and making the difficult choices to do what's best for them is super emotional. It's a powerful show of love between a mother and daughter who have overcome a dark situation and come out stronger on the other side.

She was so young with such innocent eyes, she always dreamt of a fairytale life/And all the things your money can't buy, she thought Daddy was a wonderful guy/Then suddenly, things seemed to change, it was the moment she took on his name/He took his anger out on her face, she kept all of her pain locked away/Oh Mother, we're stronger from all of the tears you have shed/Oh Mother, don't look back, 'cause he'll never hurt us again/So Mother, I thank you for all you've done and still do/You got me, I got you, together we always pull through/We always pull through, we always pull through/Oh Mother, oh Mother, oh Mother

Mamma Mia by Meryl Streep (written by B. Andersson, B. Ulvaeus, B. McCluskey, M. McCluskey, S. Anderson)

Featured in the 2008 film adaptation of Mamma Mia!, this song with always be a certified banger. Meryl Streep did such a great job in the role of Donna, and this scene with her panicking as her former lovers arrive for her daughter's wedding is classic. Mamma Mia! is a movie my mom and I have watched together so many times, so this whole soundtrack has a ton of good memories for me.

I was cheated by you and I think you know when/So I made up my mind, it must come to an end/Look at me now, will I ever learn/I don't know how, but I suddenly lose control/There's a fire within my soul/Just one look and I can hear a bell ring/One more look and I forget everything, oh/Mamma mia, here I go again/My, my, how can I resist you/Mamma mia, does it show again/My, my, just how much I've missed you/Yes, I've been brokenhearted/Blue since the day we parted/Why, why did I ever let you go/Mamma mia, now I really know,/My, my, I should not've let you go

You're My Best Friend by Queen (written by J. Deacon)

Featured on Queen's 1975 album A Night at the Opera, this song was originally written by Queen's bassist John Deacon for his wife. I count myself so lucky that I can count my mother as one of my best friends, and while we're so similar to each other we also respect the ways in which we differ. We talk pretty much every day, and I genuinely can't imagine life without her.

Ooh, you make me live/Whatever this world can give to me/It's you, you're all I see/Ooh, you make me live now, honey/Ooh, you make me live/Oh, you're the best friend that I ever had/I’ve been with you such a long time/You're my sunshine and I want you to know/That my feelings are true/I really love you/Oh, you're my best friend

Godspeed (Sweet Dreams) by The Chicks (written by R. Foster)

Featured on The Chicks' 2002 album Home, this song is actually a cover of a Radney Foster song from three years earlier. Foster and his wife sent the song to Chicks' front woman Natalie Maines after the birth of her child, and you can hear the "new mom wonder" in her voice throughout the whole track. It's a sweet, beautiful lullaby that's applicable to any generation.

Dragon tales and the water is wide/Pirates sail and lost boys fly/Fish bite moonbeams every night/And I love you/Godspeed, little man/Sweet dreams, little man/Oh, my love will fly to you each night on angel's wings/Godspeed/Sweet dreams

Share some love and thanks with your mother figures this week, because they can never, ever hear it enough. Happy listening, and see ya'll next week!
