Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself

Quick disclaimer: I’ve never written a blog in my life, so if this one isn’t great I plan on getting better as I go.
This blog is a brainchild of mine that I barely knew existed until very recently. At the end of Summer 2019, I felt guided to do a small Facebook “experiment” where I posted 30 songs for 30 days that had a special meaning to me. This experiment wasn’t necessarily for anyone but me – I was going through a lot of emotional turmoil at the time – and I found it extremely therapeutic to post these songs and the lyrics that really spoke to my heart and soul for anyone who cared enough to listen.
Music is a huge part of my life – I’ve been singing since I could talk, which culminated in voice lessons throughout high school and a real life, bonafide Bachelor of Music degree after four years of college. My husband is a musician as well, which was a huge “checklist” item on my list of a perfect spouse. While my parents and grandparents are not musicians, music was an inescapable part of life, woven through anything and everything. All of these musical influences on my life have defintely introduced me to multiple types of music, so my taste is fairly eclectic:
Mom always had 90’s country or musical soundtracks playing. For so long, I thought the only radio station worth listening to was our favorite country station here in Fort Worth. Dad doesn’t listen to nearly as much music as Mom always has, but the man has EXCELLENT taste in classic rock. Hunny (my maternal grandmother) is the oldies queen. You can’t convince her there’s a better musician out there than Elvis Presley, despite all of us trying our hardest to do so. John (my husband) was a huge culture shock – he was my first introduction to metal. Upon first glance, he is the LAST guy you would ever think would listen to hardcore screaming but he lives for it. School created an appreciation for classical music that I’d never experienced before, but am so thankful that I have now.
What I hope to achieve through this blog is a way to get these thoughts I have in my head about all the different music I listen to out, because the thoughts feel like they’re going to waste just sitting here in my brain. Here’s what I’ll probably end up talking about: -I developed a mildly unusual hobby of curating playlists when I was 14 years old. These aren’t just your usual run of the mill “Worship,” “Exercise,” “Happy,” “Sad” playlists (although I have those as well) – these are playlists for holidays, these are playlists for TV shows/movies/book series that I’m obsessed with, these are playlists for specific moments in my life that I want to include “theme music.” I’m proud of these playlists, so I’ll probably be sharing glimpses of them with you. -I love worship music. I am very active in the worship team at my home church. I have a running spreadsheet on my laptop with all my worship music and respective verses and themes. I will probably share glimpses of those with you as well. -I. Love. Lyrics. Lyrics are what really and truly speak to me in music. I like to dissect them so there will likely be some of that as well.
Whether you read this blog once or one hundred times, if you get anything out of it I will be happy. And I would like to end this introductory blog with some words from the incomparable Freddie Mercury: “Someone will always be prettier. Someone will always be smarter. Someone will always be younger. But they will never be you.”
