Songs for the Day Court

Writer's picture: jordannswrightjordannswright

Hello and welcome back to Part 6 of our Prythian Court series! Today, we're going to be looking at the playlist I made for The Day Court, the second Solar Court that is ruled over by High Lord Helion.

We know a little bit about Day thanks to their relationship to our main characters. Helion Spell-Cleaver is, to put it bluntly, an absolute bad ass and a total delight to read about. The Day Court is best known for their vast wells of knowledge and huge network of libraries, making them a go-to destination if you have a question that needs answering and don't have time (or skill) enough to catch a Suriel. Helion also has the incredible power of just being able to burn through other magic (wards, etc) with his magic that looks like intense sunlight, and I think that's just neat.

Like the other courts, I've done my best to capture the essence of the Day Court on this playlist, not necessarily adding a bunch of songs that remind me of Helion. If you haven't read the books, this series may be a little confusing for you, but my remedy for that is to either read them or to just enjoy the playlists for what they are.

Below is a sampling of my Day Court Playlist, which is naturally much too long to be compressed into a single post. You can check out the full list by following me on Apple Music @audioaesthetics. Disclaimer: I do not own any character or property listed below, I'm just a huge fan and love to make playlists for my favorite fandoms.

Daydreamer by Adele (written by A. Adkins)

Featured on Adele's 2008 album 19, this beautiful little song could fit in just as well with Dawn as it does Day. It's an ode to the narrator's lover, an admitted daydreamer (hence the title) and how he spends his days thinking of both everything and nothing. I love the simplicity of this one and how it brings to mind sunshine coming through a window or covering a front porch.

Daydreamer, sitting on the sea, soaking up the sun/He is a real lover of making up the past and feeling up his girl like he's never felt her figure before/A jaw dropper, looks good when he walks, is the subject of their talk/He would be hard to chase, but good to catch and he could change the world with his hands behind his back, oh/You can find him sittin' on your doorstep/Waiting for a surprise/And he will feel like he's been there for hours/And you can tell that he'll be there for life

Goldfǐsh ~ by Enter Shikari (written by C. Batten, R. Rolfe, R. Reynolds, L. Clewlow)

Featured on Enter Shikari's 2023 album A Kiss for the Whole World, this song is here for the gold. It's an interesting one to listen to, kind of an experimental blend of different genres. It's definitely a song to experience for yourself.

I operate through space and time/I infiltrate every part of your mind/Under my influence, I'm completely subliminal/I’m bigger than biblical, I propel every criminal/Still, silent, sterile, desolate, and rippleless/Know that you are powerless, can you get a grip on this/Saddle up and grapple with it/Know that I will shackle, impede and paralyze those that battle with it/Come a little closer to me/Have you figured it, figured it out/Come a little closer to me/You are under my control/You are a goldfish, I am the bowl/You're swimming in circles, I am eternal/You are the goldfish, I am the bowl

New Gold by Gorillaz ft. Bootie Brown & Tame Impala (written by D. Albarn, R. Robinson, G. Kurstin, K. Parker)

Featured on Gorillaz's 2022 album Cracker Island, this song is a fun, colorful little bop. It's got the kaleidoscope of color you could expect from a project that includes Tame Impala, and the music itself feels full of light. It's like you can feel the shimmer of the title's gold throughout the track.

But in the magic cove, there's a pretty one/I ask her where it goes, 'cause I really want/I wonder if she knows that we're underwater/That's the way it goes in this city wonder/Moved to the spot, I'm one of a few/A whole lot of everything, but nothing to do/‘Tilted in a Tesla, pardon the ex-wrestler/He dates Francesca, they on them Xannies/Liposuction's scheduled for Granny/She want to save some, add to her fanny/Girls' trip, Miami at the end of the year/Polluted-filled skies, trying to think clear/I heard the bad news while I was shedding a beer/Watch out from the cults, Paul Revere/We all play a part in the devil's cheer/Run to the hills, 'cause the end is near

All the Gold in California by Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers Band (written by L. Gatlin)

Featured on The Gatlin Brothers' 1979 album Straight Ahead, we've got gold again coming in hot. Now, the gold in question here is, of course, money, but I digress. This song is a banger, with awesome harmonies and a catchy chorus.

All the gold in California/Is in a bank in the middle of Beverly Hills in somebody else's name/So if you're dreaming about California/It don't matter at all where you've played before, California's a brand new game/Tryin' to be a hero, winding up a zero/Can scar a man forever right down to your soul/Living on the spotlight can kill a man outright/‘Cause everything that glitters is not gold

Good Ol' Days by Miranda Lambert (written by M. Lambert, B. Cobb, A. Hood)

Featured on Lambert's 2016 album The Weight of These Wings, this chill, laid back song is all about reminiscing on days gone by. We as a society do tend to refer to the past as "the olden days" or the "good ol' days" or even the "golden days," and I wonder where that actually got started. Regardless, this is a great one to just kick back and relax to.

Oh, southern breeze, knock me to my knees/I believe you're the only one who can/The religious and the rest, they've all tried their best/Well, I guess some things you just don't understand/Oh Lord, when will the road run out, I’m on the road but I'm in doubt/And I don't know why, still I second guess my pace/If I stand to lose from winning, to find the truth, I'm willing/To start back at the beginning of the good ol' days, the good ol' days

Towards the Sun by Sia (written by S. Furler, J. Shatkin)

Featured on Sia's 2024 album Reasonable Woman, this song has us looking, much like a sunflower, towards the sun. This hasn't been confirmed as of yet, but I love the idea of sunflower fields throughout the Day Court. It's such a beautiful, sweet visual that would add that natural touch to the glitz of this territory.

Don't sleep, can't eat, damn stress/Can't see the old me, what a mess/I hit the ground, yeah, I'm going down/I hit the ground, think I'm going down/Yeah, I hit the ground, I think I'm going down/I hit the ground, think I'm going down/Then suddenly, I feel the breeze/It's left in me, now it can be/A new someone, so here I come/Towards the sun, towards the sun, towards the sun

One Bad Day by Spacey Jane (written by K. Kersting, C. Harper, A. Hardman-Le Cornu, P. Lane, K. Lama)

Released as a single in January 2024, this track switches us over from talking about the good old days to one of the more unfortunate parts of life: bad days. We all hate bad days, that's kind of the point. However, we can't let one bad day ruin an entire life, and even the worst days start over brand new at midnight.

You called it a break, I’ll call it the mourning/Everything we had, everything I'm losing/Tell it all again, start at the beginning/You say it's in my head, it's real because I feel it/Ooh, ah, this is the last time I feel like this/Or at least, I hope it is/Ah, this is the last time I feel like this/Or at least, I hope it is/One bad day, I lost my shit and called the week off/Got your way, you threw the baby out with the trough/It's not that bad if you think about it/You leaving now is a gun to my head

gold rush by Taylor Swift (written by J. Antonoff, T. Swift)

Featured on Swift's 2020 album evermore, this song gets an automatic add for the color many of us jump to when we think about the sun: gold. It's a dazzling, shiny, blinding thing, and while it's instrumental to life here on Earth it can be dangerous if not treated with respect and caution. This isn't my favorite song from this album, but it's still not bad.

Gleaming, twinkling/Eyes like sinking/Ships on waters/So inviting, I almost jump in/But I don't like a gold rush, gold rush/I don't like anticipating my face in a red flush/I don't like that anyone would die to feel your touch/Everybody wants you/Everybody wonders what it would be like to love you/Walk past, quick brush/I don't like slow motion double vision in rose blush/I don't like that falling feels like flying 'til the bone crush/Everybody wants you, but I don't like a gold rush/What must it be like to grow up that beautiful/With your hair falling into place like dominos/I see me padding 'cross your wooden floors/With my Eagles t-shirt hanging from the door/At dinner parties, I call you out on your contrarian shit/And the coastal town we wandered 'round had never seen a love as pure as it/And then it fades into the gray of my day old tea/‘Cause you know it could never be

Good Day Sunshine by The Beatles (written by J. Lennon, P. McCartney)

Featured on The Beatles's 1966 album Revolver, this song is an absolute bop from start to finish. It's happy, bright, and positive, all things that help contribute to having a pretty good day for most people. It's a classic for any time of day, any time of year.

Good day sunshine/Good day sunshine/Good day sunshine/I need to laugh, and when the sun is out/I’ve got something I can laugh about/I feel good in a special way/I’m in love and it's a sunny day

Sun to Me by Zach Bryan (written by Z. Bryan)

Featured on Bryan's 2022 album American Heartbreak, this song brings the sun back into focus for us again. A lot of us have had some kind of relationship, romantic or not, where the other person is like the sun to us, the very center of our universe. It's a nice notion from a certain point of view, but it puts a pretty unfair amount of pressure on the other party, so remember that our loved ones are just people, too, not the sun.

5:34 a.m., I was about to start my day/But she lay in there across me, so I stayed anyway/Arms tired, legs numb, her wrapped around my knee/Sweetest of the sunflowers, how you're the sun to me/I don't recall what you were wearing on the first night we met/Besides the subtle cloud around you from my last cigarette/And you come from a good place with a happy family/The only bad you've ever done was to see the good in me/I've been living, waiting on the day/That the good Lord willing, sends you out my way/I’ve seen hard times, bad luck, all that in between/Sweetest of the sunflowers, how you're the sun to me

Whether you do or don't align with the Day Court or you have no idea whatsoever I've been talking about, I hope you found some fun new music to check out. Happy listening, and see ya'll next week!
