VIRGO: All Virgos are extremely friendly and intelligent - except for you. Expect a big surprise today when you wind up with your head impaled upon a stick. -Weird Al Yankovic
Here we are already at the time of year where Virgos get to shine. These earth signs, represented by the constellation of the virgin, are said to be extremely intuitive and empathetic to others feelings and can also be a little on the overly demanding, perfectionistic nature. Turns out there are some excellent musicians born during this time of year, and the people I know personally born during this time are pretty awesome as well. Let's go ahead and dive in to this sampling from my master playlist!
Wake Me Up by Avicii (written by E. Dawkins, A. Pournouri, M. Einziger, T. Bergling)
I really, really liked the music Avicii put out before he passed away in 2018. Some of his Virgo characteristics come through in the lyrics of his hit single Wake Me Up from his 2013 album True, which may be the best known single of his career and was named the highest charting dance song of the 2010's. The lyrics portray a young, hardworking individual who is practical and analytical enough to know that he's in danger of wasting his life on trivial things but is just trying to enjoy living in the moment. I've loved this song since it was released, especially with Aloe Blacc's vocals, so it was great getting to listen to it this week.
Feeling my way through the darkness, guided by a beating heart/I can't tell where the journey will end, but I know where to start/They tell me I'm too young to understand, they say I'm caught up in a dream/Well, life will pass me by if I don't open up my eyes, well, that's fine by me/So wake me up when it's all over, when I'm wiser and I'm older/All this time, I was finding myself, but I didn't know I was lost/So wake me up when it's all over, when I'm wiser and I'm older/All this time, I was finding myself and I didn't know I was lost
you should see me in a crown by Billie Eilish (written by F. O'Connell, B. O'Connell)
I really don't know what exactly it is about this song that I love so much, but it's one of my favorites off of Eilish's 2019 album WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? Eilish's lyrics definitely show Virgo traits like being demanding and argumentative, creating an intriguing but dark picture as you listen to the song. The lyrics of this song are actually pretty good, which is probably what I like about it so much.
Count my cards, watch them fall, blood on a marble wall/I like the way they all scream/Tell me which one is worse, living or dying first/Sleeping inside a hearse, I don't dream/You say, "Come over, baby, I think you're pretty"/I'm okay, I'm not your baby, if you think I'm pretty/You should see me in a crown, I'm gonna run this nothing town/Watch me make 'em bow one by, one by one, one by, one by/You should see me in a crown, your silence is my favorite sound/Watch me make 'em bow one by, one by one, one by, one by one
Just A Dream by Carrie Underwood (written by G. Sampson, H. Lindsey, S. McEwan)
This song from Underwood's 2007 album Carnival Ride is both one of my favorite of her songs as well as one of my favorite of her music videos. The lyrics tell a really heartbreaking story of a young military widow attending her husband's funeral, and if the video doesn't make you cry you may or may not have a heart, it's up for debate. True to Virgo form, the character of the wife is loyal to her husband to the very end and in her grief she can be seen demanding answers to unanswerable questions like why he had to leave her before they really even got their life together started.
It was two weeks after the day she turned eighteen/All dressed in white, going to the church that night/She had his box of letters in the passenger's seat/A sixpence in her shoe, something borrowed, something blue/And when the church doors opened up wide, she put her veil down, trying to hide the tears/Oh, she just couldn't believe it/She heard the trumpets from the military band/And the flowers fell out of her hand/Baby, why'd you leave me, why'd you have to go/I was counting on forever, now I'll never know/I can't even breathe/It's like I'm looking from the distance, standing in the background/Everybody's saying he's not coming home now/This can't be happening to me/This is just a dream
Transatlanticism by Death Cab for Cutie (written by B. Gibbard)
The title track from Death Cab for Cutie's 2003 album Transatlanticism is part of a concept album telling the story of a long distance romantic relationship. This song is a little on the longer side, running at just under 8 minutes, but it's really beautiful, meditative, and calming to listen to. The lyrics showcase Virgo traits like loyalty to a partner who's physically far away, as well as willing to put in lots of hard work to keep the relationship healthy and happy.
The Atlantic was born today, and I'll tell you how/The clouds above opened up and let it out/I was standing on the surface of a perforated sphere/When the water filled every hole/And thousands upon thousands made an ocean/Making islands where no island should go, oh, no
The Great Pretender by Freddie Mercury (written by B. Ram)
When the world lost Virgo superstar and Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in 1991, they lost a real, true, pure talent that's really difficult to find anymore. I'd never heard this cover of this song originally recorded by The Platters in 1955, but Freddie slays it like he slayed every other piece of music ever set in front of him. Through the lyrics, you see a man working his absolute hardest to pretend that he's fully recovered after a breakup although he's still loyal to the one who left him. He's almost even arguing with himself that he knows he's being ridiculous for still being hurt, but he can't help feeling the way he does.
Oh, yes, I'm the Great Pretender/Pretending I'm doing well/My need is such, I pretend too much/I'm lonely, but no one can tell/Oh, yes, I'm the Great Pretender/Adrift in a world of my own/I play the game, but to my real shame/You've left me to dream all alone/Too real is this feeling of make believe/Too real when I feel what my heart can't conceal
Right Now by Jaewynn (written by D. Wirsching, J. Roberts)
I wasn't familiar with Jaewynn until listening to this song this week, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I heard. This single from 2019 shows off Virgo traits like being loyal to a partner, being practical in her honesty of what she wants and also demanding because, as she admits, she's fairly spoiled and wasn't treated well by her last partner.
Look, my baby knew exactly what she was doing 'cause she want to be with me full-blown/I told her I like being spoiled, she got right to work and she built me a new throne/I know I deserve it, I ain't have a lot coming into the world as a newborn/So now, I'ma prolly want karats in my dirt and diamonds all over my tombstone/I don't know how I could ever have dealt with the lames that I did in the past/The always bummy, never having money dude always asking me for cash/The never bring shit to the table dude, the never put in for my cable dude/And then wanna give me an attitude, all of that while he was putting me last/Nowadays, my baby be making me feel like it's always a special occasion/If I say I'm bored, she says, "Baby, go pack up, I'm booking our next destination"/You couldn't pay half of the rent, man, you busted, I had to drop you at the station/Stop sending me messages, tryna check up 'cause I'm good, but you're testing my patience/Shame on you staying the same, shame on you being a lame/Shame on you looking insane, trying to get back in my lane/Shame on you being a dumb bum, you can't have a crumb/Shame on you being a scrub, shame on you being a scrub/Yeah, I'm feeling really up right now/Big cup if you're winning, put 'em up right now/We wild and we want to run the town right now/Sit down if you want to be a clown right now/Don't have no time for you, don't have no dime for you/No one invited you, don't have a ride for you/Laugh at the sight of you while popping bottle of bubbles with all of my girlies, we fine tuned
Just Friends by Jonas Brothers (written by J. Jonas, K. Jonas, N. Jonas)
Leo Joe got the spotlight last month, so now we turn our attention to JB's resident Virgo, Nick. Nick has always been known for his songwriting skills since the band first started, and he's never been afraid of showing his emotions through his lyrics. This song from their 2007 self-titled album is a great example of that: the narrator is so loyal to this friend of his that he's head over heels in love with, and he's working hard at growing the relationship at a steady pace and analyzing what their life will be like when they do finally get together like he knows they eventually will.
There she goes again, the girl I'm in love with/It's cool, we're just friends/We walk the halls at school, we know it's casual/It's cool, we're just/I don't wanna lead you on, no/But the truth is, I've grown fond, yeah/Everyone knows it's meant to be, falling in love, just you and me/'Til the end of time, 'til I'm on her mind, it'll happen/I've been making lots of plans, like a picket fence and a rose garden/I'll just keep on dreaming, but it's cool, 'cause we're just friends
Rainbow by Kacey Musgraves (written by K. Musgraves, N. Hemby, S. McAnally)
I know I said this in my Kacey spotlight post, but I'm still so obsessed with this song and what it means to me personally. Featured on her 2018 album Golden Hour, I think this is a great song to represent Virgo on this list - the lyrics are full of kindness, loyalty, and practicality that a bad situation won't last forever and there's always someone out there who loves you for who you are.
If you could see what I see, you'd be blinded by the colors/Yellow, red, orange, and green, and at least a million others/So tie up the boat, take off your coat, and take a look around/'Cause the sky has finally opened, the rain and wind stopped blowing/But you're stuck out in the same old storm again/You hold tight to your umbrella, well darling, I'm just trying to tell ya/That there's always been a rainbow hanging over your head
Before Your Love by Kelly Clarkson (written by C. Dennis, D. Child, G. Burr)
We're going all the way back to the beginning for Kelly's contribution to the Virgo list with one of her original singles after winning American Idol, which can be heard on her 2003 album Thankful. Virgos, and really anyone else, can probably relate to the analyzing of life before love, how they never thought they needed anyone else to get by until that one special person came along and changed everything.
I wanted more than just an ordinary life/All of my dreams seemed like castles in the sky/I stand before you, and my heart is in your hands/And I don't know how I survived without your kiss/'Cause you've given me a reason to exist/I never lived before your love/I never felt before your touch/I never needed anyone to make me feel alive/But then again, I wasn't really living/I never lived before your love
Through the Years by Kenny Rogers (written by M. Panzer, S. Dorff)
It took us a minute to get there this month, but our first personal Virgo pick comes from a pretty big influence on my life and one of the nicest people that's probably ever walked the earth, my Hunny (grandmother) Jody:
"My all time favorite song is Kenny Rogers Through the Years. It is my song to [your grandfather]. I could have written the words myself! As young as we were when we married, he has never let me down in any way. He has always been there for me and had my back. 'The sweetest days I've found, I've found with you,' 'I love the life we made,' and I am 'so glad I stayed right here with you' through these 57 years!"
I can't remember what I used to do/Who I trusted, whom I listened to before/I swear you've taught me everything I know, can't imagine needing someone so/But through the years, it seems to me I need you more and more/Through the years, through all the good and bad/I know how much we had, I've always been so glad to be with you/Through the years, it's better every day/You've kissed my tears away, as long as it's okay, I'll stay with you through the years
Time (You and I) by Khruangbin (written by L. Ochoa, M. Speer)
Our second personal Virgo pick comes from my family's other resident musician, my always funny yet insightful cousin Jake:
"I love this song. I recently purchased Khruangbin's newest album Mordechai on vinyl. During the first listen, I heard Time (You and I). What immediately intrigued me is that this song has over 13 different languages in it. Khruangbin is an acoustic/drum-beat driven band out of Houston, TX that rarely focuses on their vocal performances in songs. When first hearing this song, I fell in love with the guitar melodies they picked, partnered with the groove of the bass guitar and the drums throughout the entire song. I believe it's a song that can make all people dance; with the song having 13 different languages in it, I feel like it's a song that can speak to many while also bringing many different nationalities together in one place, enjoying one another's company."
That's life/If we had more time, we could live forever/Just you and I/We could be together/That's life/If we had more time, we could live forever/Just you and I/We could be together/That's life/We can play like children play/We can say like children say/Just you and I/Have we got the time/We can wise when we grow old/Get slow when we grow old
Thank Goodness by Kristin Chenoweth & Carole Shelley (written by S. Schwartz)
Ya'll, I love Wicked. It's in a three way tie for my favorite musical of all time. So I'm going to start adding it to these posts because I can. Thank Goodness is the first song of Act 2, and they come out strong and loud to begin the second half of this story. The character of Glinda, masterfully played in the original cast by one of my musical heroes Kristin Chenoweth, shows some of the more negative Virgo characteristics under the bubbly exterior of this song because it's all a front to make her life seem perfect and happy to the citizens of Oz when she's really depressed and worried about what her best friend is doing to topple the corrupt government. She's demanding and argumentative with herself as she convinces herself that this is what a happy ending really looks like, getting everything she ever wanted, and not understanding why she's so miserable.
Oh, what a celebration we'll have today/Thank goodness/Let's have a celebration the Glinda way/Thank goodness/Finally, a day that's totally Wicked Witch free/We couldn't be happier, thank goodness/Yes, we couldn't be happier, right, dear/Couldn't be happier, right here/Look what we've got, a fairytale plot/Our very own happy ending/Where we couldn't be happier, true, dear/Couldn't be happier, and we're/Happy to share our ending vicariously with all of you/He couldn't look handsomer, I couldn't feel humbler/We couldn't be happier, because happy is what happens when all your dreams come true
Shallow by Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper (written by A. Wyatt, A. Rossomando, S. Germanotta, M. Ronson)
Okay ya'll, I have a confession: this song was SO HUGE when it came out and I heard all the hype surrounding it, but when I heard the song on the radio for the first time I was pretty underwhelmed. That being said, as time has gone on, I appreciate it more and more. First off, I love Gaga belting a power ballad more than I love a lot of things because she's just so good. Secondly, SO pleasantly surprised at Bradley Cooper's voice. This song is a pretty good representation for our Virgos: you've got practical, analyzing questions in the verses questioning whether or not you're happy with your life, and you've got loyalty between the two narrators the they're not going to let each other drown in the deep end of the figurative pool they find themselves in.
Tell me something, girl/Are you happy in this modern world/Or do you need more/Is there something else you're searching for/I'm falling, in all the good times, I find myself longing for change/And in the bad times, I fear myself/Tell me something, boy/Aren't you tired tryna fill that void/Or do you need more/Ain't it hard keeping it so hardcore/I'm falling, in all the good times, I find myself longing for change/And in the bad times, I fear myself/I'm off the deep end, watch as I dive in/I'll never leave the ground/Crash through the surface where they can't hurt us/We're far from the shallow now/In the sh-ha, sha-la-low/In the sha-sha-la-la-la-low/In the sha-ha, sha-ha-la-low/We're far from the shallow now
Soap by Melanie Martinez (written by E. Schwartz, K. Shearer, M. Martinez)
I haven't listened to a lot of Martinez's music, but the few songs I have heard I have really enjoyed. Featured on her 2015 album Crybaby, the song has a signature Melanie Martinez sound of being very poppy, sugary, and colorful with somewhat darker lyrics underneath and I totally dig it. The lyrics show Virgo traits like being argumentative, demanding, fussy, or even obsessive to the point that you say something you regret.
Think I just remembered something, I think I left the faucet running/Now my words are filling up the tub/Darling, you're just soaking it in, but I know you'll get out the minute/You notice all your fingers pruning up/I'm tired of being careful, gentle, trying to keep the water warm/Let me under your skin/Uh oh, there it goes, I said too much, it overflowed/Why do I always spill/I feel it coming out my throat, guess I better wash my mouth out with soap/God, I wish I never spoke, now I gotta wash my mouth out with soap/I feel it coming out my throat, guess I better wash my mouth out with soap/God, I wish I never spoke, now I gotta wash my mouth out with soap
Billie Jean by Michael Jackson (written by M. Jackson)
Yes, it's true, the King of Pop himself (may he Rest In Peace) was a Virgo. He shows off some of those Virgo characteristics in my favorite song of his, Billie Jean, which of course was featured on his 1982 album Thriller. Jackson's narrator literally spends the entire song arguing with this woman who approaches him while he's with his girlfriend claiming he's the father of her child. While denying the whole affair to his girlfriend, we get to see his inner thoughts as he's hurriedly analyzing how he can get out of this situation forever.
She was more like a beauty queen from a movie scene/I said, "Don't mind, but what do you mean I am the one who will dance on the floor in the round?"/She said I am the one who will dance on the floor in the round/She told me her name was Billie Jean as she caused a scene/Then every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one who will dance on the floor in the round/People always told me, "Be careful what you do/Don't go around breaking young girls' hearts"/And Mother always told me, "Be careful who you love/Be careful what you do, 'cause the lie becomes the truth," hey/Billie Jean is not my lover/She's just a girl who claims that I am the one/But the kid is not my son/She says I am the one/But the kid is not my son
The Search by NF (written by N. Feuerstein, T. Profitt)
Our third and final personal Virgo pick comes from the mind of my good friend and extremely deep thinker, Daniel:
"Mental health is a serious subject for most millennials. Mental degradation over years due to the growing awareness of the world around them. Always aware of everyone's advances, their successes, their pinnacle points of happiness. People eloquently painting a picture of social media but hiding their failures and insecurities. Constant competition driving people to their edge. The ever looming question of, 'Am I really happy?' Learning to love and appreciate yourself is a tough skill to acquire. So many people fall to the wayside because they get lost in their own fears and inadequacies so they never reach their full potential. As time moves on so do people. Are you going to fall by the wayside and let life dictate your full potential? Or will you conquer your conflicts and make life your own?"
Hey Nate, how's life/I don't know, it's alright/I've been dealing with some things, like every human being/And really didn't sleep much last night/I'm sorry, that's fine/I just think I need a little me time/I just think I need a little free time/Little break from the shows and the bus rides/Yeah, last year, I had a breakdown/Thoughts telling me I'm lost getting too loud/Had to see a therapist, then I found out/Something funny's going on up in my house/Yeah, started thinking maybe I should move out/You know, pack my car, take a new route/Clean up my yard, get the noose out/Hang up my heart, let it air out/I've been searching/What does that mean, Nate? I've been learning/Grabbing my keepsakes, leaving my burdens/Well, I brought a few with me, I'm not perfect/Looking at the view like this concerns me/Picking up the cues, right, I'm quite nervous/Hate it when I lose sight, life gets blurry/And things might hurt me, it's probably gonna be a long journey, but hey
The Crying Game by Nicki Minaj ft. Jessie Ware (written by A. Wansel, J. Ware, O. Maraj, S. Mosttyn, W. Felder)
This is one of my favorite songs from Minaj's 2014 album The Pinkprint. The narrator, like a true Virgo, is trying her best to stay loyal to the person she loves but they just keep making it difficult by screwing her over and starting fights, causing her to switch to being argumentative and demanding. They both know the relationship is toxic but neither one is willing to either change to make it healthy or leave forever.
Here we go again, it's the game we love/Sheets all over the floor and they laced with drugs/You can't play your cards right, you had the Ace of Clubs/Hit you with the Ace of Spades in your face and shrugged/Blood dripping out your arm on my Asian rugs/We was just planning a wedding, caucasian doves/You was just telling your mans that you hate the clubs/Now we in the crying game, heart laced with slugs/Are you alone, do you need someone/Is it too late to talk, did I wait too long/Thousand words don't change a thing/Is it only three, three words that you're missing/Where did you go, couldn't see/I was too busy/Could've just said no/Where would you go, I think that I know/We're back to playing, we're back to playing/We're back to playing the crying game
Belle (Reprise) by Paige O'Hara (written by A. Menken, H. Ashman)
As much as I wanted Belle to be a Scorpio like me, she's very undoubtedly a Virgo. She exhibits all of the positive traits beautifully and naturally: she's smart, she's practical, she's hardworking, she's kind, and she's loyal. She wants so much more for her life than to stay in a town where she can't be herself, forced into a marriage where she knows she will never be happy being nothing but Gaston's prized possession.
Madame Gaston, can't you just see it/Madame Gaston, his little wife/No sir, not me, I guarantee it/I want much more than this provincial life/I want adventure in the great, wide somewhere/I want it more than I can tell/And for once, it might be grand to have someone understand/I want so much more than they've got planned
No Option by Post Malone (written by A. Post, C. Rudd, I. Kalai, J. Bieber, L. Bell, M. Hancock, M. McGinnis, T. Roberts)
Posty comes in on the Virgo list with this song from his 2016 album Stoney. The lyrics show someone who's trying to get the woman trying to hang out with him to admit that she's only hanging around for free stuff, demanding her to tell the truth so that he doesn't have to call her out in front of everyone.
Oh, swinging in a four-door, now they taking photos/Bottles, we need more of those/Ooh, said she been to every show I had/And been an award, and she always be in the front row, ooh, yeah/Everything that I worked for/Waited so long to get on/The Caddy just sits on that chrome/I swing through on dubs on the floor/Baby, wanna get in this S-Class/Little mama, she just wanna go fast/You know baby, you don't get a free pass/So I told her ass, "Gas or grass"/Rolex with the diamonds keep me shining/Gotta have perfect timing when I'm riding/Brand new Aston Martin with no mileage, ooh, ooh, ooh, yeah/Hoe, I'm so clean and them motherfucker's just talking/Show up at the spot and now everyone, they all watching/Don't wanna prove you wrong, but shit, you leave me with no option, yeah, yeah
Roslyn by Bon Iver & St. Vincent (written by J. Vernon)
I refuse to be embarrassed by the fact that I know this song from the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack because all of the Twilight soundtracks were truly masterful curations of music. This really chill track from Bon Iver and St. Vincent is very meditative and calming to listen to and has a really beautiful guitar line throughout the whole song. The narrator paints a picture of trying to find the real person underneath someone's who's hiding their true self from the world.
Up with your turret/Aren't we just terrified/Shale, screen your worry/From what you won't ever find/Don't let it fool you/Don't let it pull you down/Dancing around/Folds in the gown
Everything Has Changed by Taylor Swift ft. Ed Sheeran (written by E. Sheeran, T. Swift)
Just like every other song on her 2012 album Red, this song is a perfect showcase of Swift's songwriting abilities, this time mixed in with the songwriting abilities of the also crazy talented Sheeran. I love when these two friends collaborate together because the results never fail to impress. This song is so sweet and beautiful and romantic, and I think it's a good representation of Virgo for this list as well. The two narrators have only just met, but they feel an instant connection and feel loyalty towards one another and are willing to put in the work to create a beautiful relationship.
All I knew this morning when I woke/Is I know something now, know something now that I didn't before/And all I've seen since eighteen hours ago/Is green eyes and freckles and your smile in the back of my mind, making me feel like/I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now/I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now/I just wanna know you better, know you better, know you better now/I just wanna know you, know you, know you/'Cause all I know is we said hello, and your eyes look like coming home/All I know is a simple name, everything has changed/All I know is you held the door, you'll be mine and I'll be yours/All I know since yesterday is everything has changed
Happy Virgo Season! As always, whether you believe in astrology or not, I hope you at least found some good new music to listen to. See ya'll next week!
