Thanksgiving, Vol. 6

Writer's picture: jordannswrightjordannswright

In the immortal words of Linda Belcher, "Pass the cranberry sauce!" Thanksgiving is here once again, a time to gather with our loved ones, eat until we're borderline ill, watch some football, and take a moment to be thankful for the blessings of the year. With 2024 quickly coming to an end, a brief pause in late November can honestly be so beneficial before the all-out sprint many of us experience throughout December, so I sincerely hope everyone gets at least a little time to breathe this week.

I now present 2024's Thanksgiving Playlist, somehow already our sixth one. As always, my full Thanksgiving "master" playlist can be found on Apple Music @audioaesthetics.

No One Beside (Live) by Elevation Worship (written by S. Furtick, C. Brown, T. Hammer)

Originally featured on Elevation's 2020 live album Graves into Gardens with lead vocals from worship leader Anna Sailors, this song is full of heartfelt thanks for our Lord Jesus. He is the reason behind every blessing we've ever received, and it's an honor to be able to worship Him.

Within my heart is a melody that was not taught/In the darkest night, it still goes on, the anthem of my God/Within my heart is a treasure that cannot be bought/When all else is faded, it will not, the presence of my God/Oh, magnify the Lord/Let us exalt His name together/No one beside You, Lord/Honor and praise are Yours forever

Here I Am to Worship (Live) by Hillsong Worship & Reuben Morgan (written by T. Hughes)

Originally featured on Hillsong's 2003 album Hope with lead vocals from worship leader Reuben Morgan, this worship classic is a declaration of thanks, respect, love, and awe for the Lord. He came to this world for us so that His children can have the greatest blessing of all: eternal life with Him.

Light of the world, You stepped down into darkness/Opened my eyes, let me see/Beauty that made this heart adore You/Hope of a life spent with You/Here I am to worship, here I am to bow down/Here I am to say that You're my God/You're altogether lovely, altogether worthy/Altogether wonderful to me

Misty by Julie London (written by E. Gardner, J. Burke)

Originally featured on London's 1960 album Around Midnight, this pretty little song is a sweet, classic description of how it can feel spending time with someone you love dearly. Especially as I prepare to celebrate my daughter's first ever Thanksgiving, this song gives me the warm fuzzies, and at the risk of sounding obscenely corny, makes me feel a little misty myself.

Look at me, I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree/And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud/I can't understand/I get misty holding your hand/Walk my way/And a thousand violins begin to play/Or it might be the sound of your hello/This magic I hear, I get misty the moment you're near/You could say that you're leading me on/But it's just what I want you to do/Don't you realize how hopelessly I’m lost/That's why I'm following you

All My Friends by LCD Soundsystem (written by J. Murphy, T. Pope, P. Mahoney)

Originally featured on LCD Soundsystem's 2007 album Sound of Silver, this one has a different sort of nostalgic feel, especially since to me it sounds more like a '90s vibe. When we get so busy it feels like you just can't stop, missing your friends can be an ever present feeling, and getting together over the holidays can be a nice relief.

That's how it starts, we go back to your house/You check the charts and start to figure it out/And if it's crowded, all the better, because we know we're gonna be up late/But if you're worried about the weather, then you picked the wrong place to stay/That's how it starts, and so it starts/You switch the engine on, we set controls for the heart of the sun/One of the ways we show our age/And if the sun comes up, if the sun comes up, if the sun comes up/And I still don't wanna stagger home/Then it's the memory of our betters/That are keeping us on our feet

I've Got the World On a String by Louis Prima & The Witnesses (written by H. Arlen, T. Koehler)

Originally featured on Prima's 1957 album The Call of the Wildest, this song has become a standard in a songbook of classics. When we think about the blessings we've received, it's so easy to feel like we're sitting on top of the world.

I've got the world on a string/And I'm sitting on a rainbow/Got that string around my little finger/What a world, and, what a life, ohh, I'm in love/I got a song I sing/And I can make the rain go/Anytime I move my crazy little finger/Lucky me, lucky me, lucky me, lucky me, lucky me/Can't you see, I'm in love

Thanksgiving Song by Mary Chapin Carpenter (written by M. Carpenter)

Originally featured on Carpenter's 2008 album Come Darkness, Come Light: Twelve Songs of Christmas, this beautiful song paints a Thomas Kinkaide level mental picture of an ideal Thanksgiving day. Now, we all know that's a rare occurrence in the best of times, but the sentiment I think extends beyond the picturesque: if you and your loved ones are together and happy, that's also a perfect Thanksgiving day.

Grateful for each hand we hold/Gathered 'round this table/From far and near, we travel home/Blessed that we are able/Grateful for this sheltered place/With light in every window/Saying, "Welcome, welcome, share this feast/Come in away from sorrow”/Father, mother, daughter, son/Neighbor, friend, and friendless/All together, everyone/In the gift of loving kindness

I Love Being Here With You by Peggy Lee (written by B. Schluger, N. Egstrom)

Released as a single in 1961, this fun number is great for a Thanksgiving dinner party atmosphere. Anywhere you feel comfortable with people you love can feel like home.

I love the East, I love the West/And North and South, they're both the best/But I only want go there as a guest/'Cause I love being here with you/I love the sea, I love the shore/I love the rocks and what is more/With you there, they'd never be a bore/'Cause I love being here with you/Singing in the shower, laughing by the hour/Life is such a breezy game/Love all kinds of weather, long as we're together/I love to hear you say my name/I love good wine and fine cuisine/And candlelight, I like the scene/But baby, if you know what I mean/I love being here with you/I love being here with you

If you're celebrating this week, I wish you a happy, safe Thanksgiving. Happy listening, and see ya'll next week!
