Love, love, love, love is all you need, right? Well, that's what Valentine's Day would have you believe. Even though it's not the only ingredient to a happy, fulfilled life, I agree that it's one of the most important ones, so for the fifth year in a row I present to you the 2024 Valentine's Playlist, collected from the Master Playlist available on Apple Music @audioaesthetics. Let's see what we have in store this year!
Grateful by Anthony Hamilton (written by A. Hamilton, M. Batson)
Featured on Hamilton's 2016 album What I'm Feelin', I featured this song for Thanksgiving a few years ago and decided it fits right in for Valentine's Day as well. I know I for one am incredibly grateful for my husband, especially as we prepare to embark on the new journey of becoming parents this year.
Here I am living the best days of my life/And it goes without saying, you’ve turned it all around/Introduced me to love, well, I had given up/And I’m so grateful, grateful for you/I can tell the benefits of loving someone just like you/And the way you change my life, girl, I owe it to, owe it all to you/I’m fine with loving you, said I’m ‘bout real loving you, babe/All because of you, all because of/All because of you
Always by Atlantic Starr (written by D. Lewis, W. Lewis, J. Lewis)
Featured on Atlantic Starr's 1986 album All In The Name Of Love, we love a good, classic love ballad here on this blog. These lyrics are pretty straight forward with traditional themes of romance, and it definitely works without being overtly corny, creating a really nice love song.
Girl, you are to me all that a woman should be/And I dedicate my life to you always/A love like yours is grand, it must have been sent from up above/And I know you'll stay this way for always/And we both know that our love will grow/And forever it will be you and me, hey/Ooh, you're like the sun chasing all of the rain away/When you come around, you bring brighter days/You're the perfect one for me, and you forever will be/And I will love you so for always
Austin by Blake Shelton (written by D. Kent, K. Manna)
Featured on Shelton's 2001 self-titled album, I thought this song was so blasted romantic when I was a kid. As an adult, it makes me giggle a little bit with it's "We were on a break" vibes, but I do still think the guy's faith in their love is very sweet.
She left without leavin' a number, said she needed to clear her mind/He figured she'd gone back to Austin 'cause she talked about it all the time/It was almost a year before she called him up/Three rings and an answering machine is what she got/If you're callin' 'bout the car, I sold it, if this is Tuesday night, I'm bowlin’/If you've got somethin' to sell your wastin' your time, I'm not buyin’/If it's anybody else, wait for the tone, you know what to do/And P.S., if this is Austin, I still love you
Honey Bee by Blake Shelton (written by B. Hayslip, R. Akins)
Featured on Shelton's 2011 album Red River Blue, his second entry on this post is a song I've loved since hearing it for the first time in college. These pairings throughout the chorus are just so dang cute, and the whole song just feels so innocent and so romantic, made for any couple at any stage in their relationship.
Girl, I've been thinking 'bout us, and you know I ain't good at this stuff/But these feelings piling up won't give me no rest/This might come out a little crazy, a little sideways, yeah, maybe/I don't know how long it'll take me, but I'll do my best/If you'll be my soft and sweet, I’ll be your strong and steady/You be my glass of wine, I’ll be your shot of whiskey/You be my sunny day, I’ll be your shade tree/You be my honeysuckle, I’ll be your honey bee
All 4 Love by Color Me Badd (written by B. Abrams, H. Thompson, I. Hayes, K. Thornton, M. Calderon, S. Watters, S. Cropper)
Featured on Color Me Badd's 1991 album C.M.B., this undeniably '90s bop is so much fun to listen to whether you're in a season of togetherness or singleness. From its positive lyrics about being in love to it's catchy beat and melody, it's a great song to jam to in the car, the kitchen, or anywhere else, especially if you're jamming with your special someone.
I'm so glad you're my girl, I’ll do anything for you/Call you every night and give you flowers, too/I thank the Lord for you and think about you all the time/I ask Him everyday that you'll forever be mine/I wanna hold your hand to show you I'll be there/I like to do the things that let you know I care/I sing this lullaby 'cause girl, you fill me full/I look into your eyes, you're so beautiful/Oh, girl, I think I love ya, I’m always thinkin' of ya/I want ya to know I do it all for love/I love it when we're together, girl, I need you forever/And I want you to know I do it all for love
Show You Off by Dan + Shay (written by B. Hayslip, R. Akins)
Featured on Dan + Shay's 2014 album Where It All Began, this is another more modern country song that I loved the minute I heard it. Dan + Shay have such beautiful vocal harmony together, and that fact really elevates this already romantic love song to another level; I know I myself as a woman feel so important and loved when my husband shows how proud he is of me.
You're like a sugar sweet kiss in the morning, sunshine pouring right into my window/Cool drink of water in the summer, better than the other side of the pillow/You're everything that I'm not, and then a cherry on top, yeah girl, I gotta see you tonight/Yeah, I'm taking you out, 'cause damn, baby, I'm proud/Ey oh, ey oh, when a guy like me, ey oh, ey oh, gets a girl like you/Yeah, you better know we're going to take it downtown, showing everybody what I'm crazy about/Ey oh, ey oh, anywhere we go, ey oh, ey oh, gotta let 'em all know/And imma tattoo your name on my arm, baby, I just wanna show you off
Mercy by Duffy (written by A. Duffy, S. Booker)
Featured on Duffy's 2008 album Rockferry, I've thoroughly enjoyed this banger since high school. It's a classic case of what looks to be instant attraction, the type that makes you seriously question your sanity and has you doing things and acting in ways that just don't seem normal for you.
I love you, but I gotta stay true/My morals got me on my knees, I’m begging, "Please, stop playing games"/I don't know what this is, 'cause you got me good/Just like you knew you would/I don't know what you do, but you do it well/I’m under your spell/You got me begging you for mercy/Why won't you release me/You got me begging you for mercy/Why won't you release me/I said release me
Whatever your plans are for this coming Wednesday, I hope you're able to spend Valentine's Day with someone special to you doing something you love. Happy listening, and see ya'll next week!
