fear (noun) - a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain, etc., whether the threat is real or imagined; the feeling or condition of being afraid
Synonyms: alarm, concern, despair, horror, jitters, panic, scare, terror, unease, worry
Antonyms: assurance, calmness, ease, faith, happiness, joy, trust
Fear is a recurring theme throughout worship music, but not because it's something we should settle for. As children of God, we are taught that fear is the opposite of everything He is. It is, however, a very real and human emotion that we have to practice giving over to God every day. Giving Him control of the things that we have no control over leads to peace and joy, and while it's not easy to do it's definitely something worth celebrating.
This post has seven songs about God triumphing over fear along with Scripture references that I was led to with each entry. All Scripture passages are from the New Living Translation of the Holy Bible.
We Praise You by Bethel Music & Brandon Lake (written B. Johnson, B. Lake, M. Redman, P. Wickham)
Featured on Bethel's 2020 live album Revival's In The Air with vocals from worship leader Brandon Lake, this upbeat song is full of hope that God's love will triumph over fear every single time. When we praise Him throughout the dark and scary parts of our lives, we put our trust in Him that He will always bring us back into His light.
Let praise be a weapon that silences the enemy/Let praise be a weapon that conquers all anxiety/Let it rise, let praise arise/We sing Your name in the dark and it changes everything/We sing with all we are and we claim Your victory/Let it rise, let praise arise/We'll see You break down every wall, we'll watch the giants fall/Fear cannot survive when we praise You/The God of breakthrough's on our side, forever we lift Him high/With all creation cry, God, we praise You/Oh, we praise You
Psalm 9:1 I will praise you, Lord, with all my heart; I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done.
Providence (Broke My Chains) by Citipointe Live & Jess Steer (written by J. Steer, C. Moore)
Featured on Citipointe's 2018 live album Mover Of Mountains with vocals from worship leader Jess Steer, this has become a go-to song for me when I need some comfort on hard days. When we call out to God to save us, He breaks the chains of fear that are binding us and takes our hand to lead us towards a life of peace with Him.
Waiting here to hear Your voice, to know Your heart, I made a choice/Forever You, forever You/I won't move, won't make a sound, don't wanna miss a single vowel/When You speak, oh, please speak/You said, "Walk on the waves for I am with you"/You said You'd never change and I believe You/You broke my chains, they've fallen off/I call Your name, all fear is gone/Eternity is in Your hands, every promise, every prayer/Your Kingdom reigns, Your Kingdom reigns
Psalm 103:19 The Lord has made the heavens his throne; from there he rules over everything.
4th Man by Jonathan David & Melissa Helser (written by S. Gretzinger, J. Helser, M. Helser, J. Case)
Featured on The Helsers' 2022 live album The Land I'm Livin' In, this song takes inspiration directly from Daniel Chapter 3, with Jesus protecting Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from within Nebuchadnezzar's furnace. It's very easy to feel alone when we're afraid, but Jesus is never far from us and will never, ever leave us alone for fear to overwhelm us.
Who is this Man I see standing in the flames/Coming close to me, You move so fearlessly/Calling out my name, have You come to save/Though the wind may blow, I’ll be still and know/You are above it all, but You stand here/Fourth Man in the fire, conquering my fears/You are above it all, but You draw near/Walking on the water, I will meet You here/Yes, I will meet You here
Daniel 3:24-25 But suddenly, Nebuchadnezzar jumped up in amazement and exclaimed to his advisers, “Didn’t we tie up three men and throw them into the furnace?” “Yes, Your Majesty, we certainly did,” they replied. “Look!” Nebuchadnezzar shouted. “I see four men, unbound, walking around in the fire unharmed! And the fourth looks like a god!”
I'll Be Okay by Lydia Laird (written by R. Varenkamp, L. Laird, J. Morgan)
Featured on Lydia Laird's 2020 self-titled album, this is another go-to song for me when I need to calm myself down from life's fears and anxieties. This beautiful song explains what it's like to trust God in the midst of a storm and know that even though it's difficult in the moment, everything will end up okay in the end because we'll be with Him through it all.
Give me peace when I am tossed and frightened, lost among the waves/Give me hope when I’m in doubt and fears are clouding up my faith/Would You come and move the mountains 'cause I'm too weak to climb/Promise that You're with me in this fight/I can hear the thunder, but I'm okay 'cause You're with me/I know You will cover me, I'll be safe 'cause You're with me/I’ll be okay, I’ll be okay/I’ll be okay, I’ll be okay
Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
Isaiah Song by Maverick City Music ft. Chandler Moore (written by C. Moore, B. Jones, S. Loamond)
Featured on Maverick City's 2020 album Maverick City Music, Vol. 3: Pt. 2 with vocals from worship leader Chandler Moore, this amazing worship song is inspired by Isaiah Chapter 42, where God's people are challenged to sing a new song to the Lord to praise Him in all His glory. Praising and worship during times of fear may feel impossible, but we have to put our faith in God even in difficult situations because nothing is impossible for Him.
This is the Word of the Lord, your Creator/I am the God who stood before the world was framed/I am the First, the Last, and everything between/I hold your future, who could know these things but Me/So don't fear/I will be Your song/Sing, sing, oh barren land/Water is coming to the thirsty/Though you are empty, I am the well/Draw from Me, I will provide
Isaiah 42:10 Sing a new song to the Lord! Sing his praises from the ends of the earth! Sing, all you who sail the seas, all you who live in distant coastlands.
Here In Your Presence by New Life Worship (written by J. Egan)
Featured on New Life's 2009 compilation album New Life Worship: I Am Free (The Essential Collection), this classic worship song depicts what eternity in God's presence will be like without fear weighing on our hearts. Joy and wonder are what we have to look forward to in Heaven with Him, and that'll be absolutely amazing.
Found in your hands, the fullness of joy/Every fear suddenly wiped away/Here in Your presence/All of my gains now fade away/Every crowd no longer on display/Here in Your presence/Heaven is trembling in awe of Your wonder/The kings and their kingdoms are standing amazed/Here in Your presence, we are undone/Here in Your presence, heaven and earth become one/Here in Your presence, all things are new/Here in Your presence, everything bows before You
Exodus 33:14 The Lord replied, “I will personally go with you, Moses, and I will give you rest - everything will be fine for you.”
Battle Belongs by Phil Wickham (written by B. Johnson, P. Wickham)
Featured on Wickham's 2021 album Hymn Of Heaven, this absolute banger of a song reminds that God is the ultimate fortress who will protect us from all of our earthly fears. Even when we can't see past the bad in a situation, He is the Light leading us to the joy and peace on the other side.
And if You are for me, who can be against me, yeah/For Jesus, there's nothing impossible for You/When all I see are the ashes, You see the beauty, thank You, God/When all I see is a cross, God, You see the empty tomb/So when I fight, I'll fight on my knees with my hands lifted high/Oh God, the battle belongs to You/And every fear I lay at Your feet, I’ll sing through the night/Oh God, the battle belongs to You
II Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.
No matter what season of life you're experience right now, I hope this music brings you some hope and peace. Happy listening, and see ya'll next week!
